The PhD's Mission
At the regional level the PhD program is embedded in one of the most dynamic systems in Italy in terms of biomedical research and innovation. Emilia-Romagna is indeed characterized by strong integration between universities, healthcare, and industry and by the presence of advanced university hospital centres, an innovative production system, particularly in the biomedical sector.
At the international level, the PhD program fully fits within the paradigm of contemporary biomedicine, characterized by interdisciplinarity, internationalization, strong orientation toward clinical translation. Indeed, from a scientific and clinical perspective:
- approximately 80% of rare diseases are estimated to have a genetic basis and are therefore potentially treatable with molecular approaches,
- however, fewer than 10% of these diseases currently have an effective therapy,
- in transplant medicine, millions of people need organs every year, yet only a small portion receive them, and regenerative medicine could help fill this gap.
This balance between scientific and technological progress and practical limitations makes molecular and regenerative medicine one of the main challenges of current biomedical research and supports the mission of the MRM PhD program in training highly qualified professionals capable of pursuing research and development careers not only in universities and public or private research institutions, but also in industries related to the healthcare, pharmaceutical, and biomedical sectors.
Indeed, the doctoral program promotes advanced training based on the integration of basic research, applied research, and clinical practice, fostering a multidisciplinary and international approach. The program's mission is also to support the development of scientific, technological, and transversal skills that enable doctoral students to contribute independently and critically to the advancement of biomedical research, technology transfer, and therapeutic innovation.
Therefore, through a dynamic and collaborative scientific environment, the program aims to promote excellence, research ethics, internationalization, and dialogue with the healthcare system, research institutions, and the manufacturing sector, in order to generate knowledge and innovative solutions for human health.
